What is a DBA?

A database administrator, or DBA, is an information engineer who is responsible for managing or performing all activities relating to maintenance of a successful database environment.

A database administrator is a database systems expert, with expertise regarding the following:

  • Implementation and configuration of databases
  • Database design
  • Data extraction, transformation and loading (ETL)
  • Handling of test data
  • Problem-solving
  • Data integrity
  • Database security
  • Encoding
  • Optimization, backing up and restoration of databases

A fundamental responsibility of just about every database administrator is the installation of new databases. The DBA will be the central point of contact regarding the database systems that a business uses.

There are many different types of DBAs. The most common type is the type that performs all kinds of administration and computer-related tasks, but it is not uncommon for this role to also focus on specific problem areas.

In the case of larger companies, the role is usually divided into separate job types. The various types include:

  • System DBA
  • Database architect
  • Database analyst
  • Application DBA
  • Task-oriented DBA
  • Performance analyst
  • Data warehouse administrator
  • Cloud DBA

If a company uses a database system for mission-critical workloads, it is important to have one or more DBAs to ensure that applications have continuous, uninterrupted access to data.

Database management is undoubtedly an important component of the IT environment for any business which relies on one or more database systems. Without supervision by a DBA, it is inevitable that application and system outages, downtime and delays will occur. Such issues often result in business interruptions which can adversely affect revenue, customer experience and reputation.
