What does a typical workday look like to you?

In my role as a DBA, a typical workday begins with reviewing all alerts from the previous day, including night alerts that did not require immediate action. I manage incoming tickets and collaborate with other teams on database-related tasks, such as adding new users, performing database backups, or conducting database migrations. A significant part of my job involves monitoring and optimizing database system performance, as well as setting up and troubleshooting AlwaysOn Availability Groups. During incidents, I handle troubleshooting and corrective measures to ensure smooth operations.

I also participate in meetings with colleagues to discuss customer requirements and needs, which often involve setting up new databases or addressing specific project-related queries. I am responsible for the installation, configuration, updates, and patches of SQL servers, as well as managing migrations and upgrades. By handling alerts and notifications from monitoring systems, I ensure that issues are quickly identified and resolved, which is crucial for maintaining high data security and continuous operations.

Which technologies do you work with?

I primarily work with Microsoft SQL Server database systems and SQL Server Management Studio, a tool used to manage SQL Server databases. Additionally, I utilize PowerShell to administer the database.

Do you use AI in your job? If yes, how?

AI is an invaluable tool for me, especially when writing and optimizing scripts. When I need to refine a script, AI provides valuable suggestions for improvements, making my work more efficient.

When searching for information online and not finding great answers, I can leverage AI to generate more precise and relevant results, as well as to discover other useful scripts.

What drives you at work and in your role, what's fun?

Challenging and diverse tasks are crucial for me and motivate me to continuously develop.

Collaboration with skilled colleagues is important, as it allows us to learn from each other. 

What is the best thing about working in Cegal?

One of the primary reasons I enjoy working at Cegal is my team. We have many skilled colleagues and database experts who are always available to discuss and solve any issues together. The company is also genuinely committed to investing in its employees, which is evident through the availability of educational platforms. I have also had the opportunity to attend international conferences, such as PASS in Seattle, which has provided me with valuable knowledge and inspiration. These opportunities for continuous learning are a significant advantage.

What is important for success in what you do and why?

To succeed in my role, it is crucial to have extensive experience and build a robust skill set in various aspects of database management. By working with different databases and scenarios, one learns to recognize and handle diverse situations effectively. Keeping up-to-date with rapid technological advancements is also crucial. The ability to work with cloud databases is vital, as is knowing multiple database systems, such as PostgreSQL and MySQL, to avoid being confined to a single platform.

The key to success is developing strong expertise and continuously staying abreast of technological progress.

Is there anything else we should know about you?

I am married and have a wonderful 1.5-year-old son. Much of my spare time is dedicated to spending quality moments with my family.
