Taking Oracle to the cloud? Consider the economy, technology and make a plan

If you are going to move Oracle middleware and applications to the cloud, there are three things to think about: finances, technology and making a good plan for the migration. Read Oracle expert Bjarte Drivene's advice when taking Oracle to the cloud.

Bjarte Drivenes (pictured), Enterprise Architect at Oracle, has given countless companies good advice in IT modernization and digitalisation. He says that there are three things to think about in particular when moving to the cloud.

3 things to think about when moving to the cloud:

1. Costs and savings.
2. The technical possibilities and limitations.
3. A step-by-step plan for migrating to the cloud.

Costs and savings

- Five numbers give the cost picture when moving Oracle solutions from your own data room to the cloud. The five numbers consist of the following:

• The software costs on-prem compared to
• Software costs in the cloud
• The hardware costs on-prem compared to
• Hardware costs in the cloud
• The actual transition cost

It is not uncommon to halve IT costs by moving to the cloud.

CEGAL's experience shows that most businesses save large amounts, up to several million kroner in IT operating costs, by moving to the cloud. Drivenes explains why:
- For on-prem, you have to buy hardware and licenses that are powerful enough so that you can remove the peaks. In the cloud, you pay for what you use. It is not uncommon to halve IT costs by moving to the cloud.

Technical possibilities and limitations

The technical aspects and remember to make a good plan for the migration.
- When you move Oracle middleware and applications to the cloud, you must have a relationship with and an overview of the Oracle solution on-prem. This includes, among other things, security, network, operating system and storage. Which solutions depend on each other? What integrations do you have? says Drivenes.

Step-by-step plan for migration

To lower the risk and maximize the benefits of a cloud migration, Drivenes also recommends a step-by-step cloud transition, where you improve and optimize the company's IT infrastructure and solutions at the same time as you move to the cloud.
To facilitate the process of a transition to the cloud, CEGAL has built a "cloud lift and shift" factory. It includes a review and cloud adaptation of the current infrastructure and includes, among other things:
• Analysis of current architecture and license agreements.
• Design of cloud architecture.
• Oracle Cloud Account and Environment Establishment.
• Full overview of the costs in Oracle Cloud
