Investing in more hardware or reconfiguring your hardware can give enhanced response times by reducing latency and improving throughput, but is often costly, and does not allow for the same level of scalability as alternative solutions.

By fine-tuning how queries are formulated and executed, you can ensure efficient data retrieval, minimizing processing time. Speeding up response times not only improves user experience but also boosts overall system performance, enabling better-informed decisions, and streamlining business processes, thereby driving greater efficiency and competitiveness.

A third option is moving from on-premises to a cloud-based solution like Azure or OCI. While this approach can improve response times in a lot of scenarios, the results are dependent on your specific setup and application. Furthermore, high performance and low response time in a cloud-based solution can be a costly affair.

Uptime

Uptime refers to the availability of your database system. By maximizing database uptime, you ensure that your data is always accessible when you need it, minimizing the chance of disruptions to business operations. Optimal uptime can be achieved through proactive monitoring and redundancy measures. This approach will keep downtime to a minimum, ensuring high availability and maintaining operational continuity. High availability can be ensured in a variety of ways and, in a database environment, it often includes a design with focus on clustering and AlwaysOn.

Downtime 

Downtime refers to when your database system is offline, rendering data inaccessible. Even brief downtimes can disrupt workflows and lead to big costly productivity losses. By implementing robust disaster recovery plans and rapid restoration protocols, you can minimize downtime and mitigate the associated business risks. Downtime can occur both as planned and as an incident, and the strategy needs to take this into consideration.

Recovery

Being able to ensure successful recovery in the event of system failures or data loss incidents is vital for any business. Recovery objectives can be split into two categories RTO and RPO.

Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is the maximum time an organization has to restore a service after an outage. It can also be explained as the time period defined by the company that indicates how long the company has to restore normal operations after an emergency event, such as a cyber-attack, natural disaster, or communication failure.

RTO is an important aspect that should be documented in the Disaster Recovery plan, outlining what needs to be done when an unexpected outage occurs. The lower the RTO, the faster the recovery needs to happen, and typically, the more costly it is to maintain such a strategy.

Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is, simply put, the amount of data that a company can afford to lose in the event of an unexpected incident without causing significant harm to the business.

If your business has an RPO of one hour for an important database, you need to ensure that you take a backup of the database, to external storage, at least once an hour. You should also continuously test your backup to ensure that it can actually be restored when you need it.

You should always take a full backup, but if you have a large database, this can be a time-consuming process. Many businesses address this by performing a full backup over the weekend and then taking differential (DIFF) backups each night. These differential backups only include changes since the last full backup, making them less time-consuming.

For databases with a high transaction volume, combining full and differential backups with frequent transaction log backups, fx. every hour, ensures minimal data loss. Transaction log backups record all transactions that have occurred since the last DIFF backup, allowing for precise recovery.

Having a layered approach means that you can restore the database to a specific point in time by first applying the most recent full backup, then the latest differential backup, and finally, the transaction logs up to the desired recovery point. This approach can provide you with a comprehensive safety net and ensures that you have a strategy that meets your RPO/RTO requirements.

 

Costs / FinOps

Optimizing database performance can be an important factor in improving FinOps. By optimizing the performance of the database, one can reduce the costs associated with data processing and storage. This can help reduce the need to invest in expensive hardware or cloud services with higher performance. By reducing the costs of data processing and storage, one can improve financial efficiency.

Another way to reduce costs is to automate stop/start and scaling up/down according to actual needs. This can result in significant savings by avoiding unnecessary use of resources. It may also be a good idea to distribute the load evenly to avoid peak times that can lead to high costs.
