Velocity modeling or depth conversion is the geophysical method where seismic data are converted from travel time to subsurface depth. In oil and gas exploration and production velocity modeling is used to determine the depth of subsurface layers.
The process to build up a mathematical model of the subsurface from measured information and seismic data is a complex workflow in reservoir characterization, and the accuracy and reliability of the data is crucial to the application of petroleum geoscience workflows.
The criticality of accurate velocity modeling and the fact that this a crucial part of any petroleum geoscience workflow has led Cegal to develop the software product Blueback Rocks Velocity in close collaboration with a major operator on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.
Blueback Rocks Velocity enables geophysicists to rapidly model the velocity information contained within their seismic data and wells and interactively constrain and test their models to provide accurate depth converted product for use within their workflows.
