Sustainable technology describes technology created or applied in consideration of environmental, social, and economic factors – aiming to minimize environmental impact, conserve resources, and promote social and economic sustainability.
Sustainable technology in the IT and energy industry refers to the development and implementation of technological solutions that enhance energy efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and promote sustainable use of resources within these sectors. It can involve reducing carbon footprint or technologies made by using greener techniques. Below are a few examples and key components of sustainable technology in the IT and energy industry:
Renewable energy consumption
Energy efficiency
Sustainable IT practices
Sustainable technology in the IT and energy industry is of particular importance to reduce carbon emissions from IT operations and energy production and to conserve natural resources. It also has economic benefits like operational cost saving and economic growth due to a drive for innovation.
By adopting sustainable technology, the IT and energy industries can contribute significantly to global efforts to combat climate change, preserve the environment, and ensure sustainable development for future generations.
Taking care of the environment is an issue we not only care about but also contribute to. We are committed to reducing our energy consumption and associated carbon emissions from our operations. By the end of 2025, we have set our science-based targets carbon reduction goal and started our reporting on yearly carbon emissions for net neutrality in 2050.

Energy and carbon are managed and monitored following the ISO 14001 certification (certified since 2021).
Cegal’s cloud solutions are primarily based in Norway and are powered by hydropower, the energy consumption of these data centers is closely monitored. The additional data centers in the UK and the Netherlands are powered by 100% renewable electricity.

Many customer solutions are built as hybrid solutions, where some applications and data are provided from our data centers, while others are provided by public cloud providers such as Microsoft, AWS, etc. Using these public cloud vendors, the sustainability focus is strong with their commitment to using green energy for their worldwide data centers. Initiatives have been implemented to reduce our carbon emissions, including motion-sensor lighting at multiple offices, hybrid working opportunities, promotion of public transport use, and cycle-to-work schemes.
