A power generator owns power plants and generates electrical energy. In total, there are around 175 power generators in Norway. Statkraft is the largest power generator and accounts for almost half of total production. The vast majority of the others are also publicly owned, but there are also some major private generators, which were primarily established to provide energy for their own industry, e.g. Norsk Hydro and Elkem.
The terms "power company" and "power generator" should not be confused with "power supplier". A power supplier is a company you purchase power from, but it may not necessarily generate electricity itself.
