Power Balance

What is Power Balance?

The power balance is the relationship between the overall generation capacity of the power generation system and the annual consumption of electrical energy in our power system. Power generation varies with precipitation and wind, while consumption varies according to temperature, industry demand and consumption by businesses and households. As a result, there are wide variations in the power balance from year to year.

Climate models indicate that we can expect warmer and wetter weather in the future. The Norwegian power balance is therefore expected to be positive, but there is of course uncertainty with regard to future weather conditions.

We will also see an increase in losses caused by water spilling over dams, because the increasing inflows will be concentrated in just a few months and because power plants are simply not designed to accept more water than they already do today. As mentioned above, there is uncertainty about this in relation to weather patterns. No account is taken of alterations to production facilities or future consumption either.
