Guarantee of Origin is a labelling scheme for electricity which shows the electricity customer that an amount of power was generated from a specific energy source. A Guarantee of Origin is proof that as much electricity has been generated using renewable sources as the amount of electricity that has been purchased. The scheme was introduced in 2001 to give consumers a choice between renewable and non-renewable power.
When a consumer purchases electricity with a Guarantee of Origin, an additional payment is made to the producer which generates electricity from renewable sources. This scheme thus helps to make renewable energy more profitable.
Statnett issues these guarantees in Norway at the request of power generators.
