What is a Grid company?

A grid company is a company that owns and operates a transmission network for electrical energy. Grid companies own and are responsible for the electricity distribution grid and for ensuring that the electricity is transported to your house.

Grid companies have a monopoly on the services they provide within their geographical area. It would have been very unprofitable to have grid companies building their own competing power grids. This means that customers cannot switch grid companies, even if they are unhappy with their company’s prices or services. The authorities regulate and monitor the finances of the grid companies.
