Ethical AI is artificial intelligence that follows well-defined ethical guidelines that concern fundamental values, such as individual rights, privacy, non-discrimination, and non-manipulation. “Ethical” means adopting AI in a way that is transparent and responsible.
Ethical AI is not limited to what is allowed within the legislation. This means that legal limits relating to the use of AI are set as a minimum threshold for acceptance, while ethical AI provides guidelines that go beyond legal requirements to ensure respect for basic human values. For example, AI algorithms that manipulate people, especially teenagers, to engage in self-destructive behavior may be legal, but this does not represent ethical AI.
Laws and regulations are generally insufficient to ensure the ethical use of AI. There is a responsibility on individuals and organizations who use AI, as well as those who develop and deliver AI tools and technology, to practice ethical AI. A proactive step must be taken to ensure that they use AI ethically. Companies that use ethical AI must have clear guidelines and well-defined review processes to ensure compliance with these guidelines.
If companies do not address ethical issues in the planning and implementation of AI projects, a lot of resources, time and money can be wasted developing software that is ultimately too risky to use or sell.
