What is Azure?

Microsoft Azure is a brand name for Microsoft's cloud service, where customers can purchase Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS).

Infrastructure as a Service is the provision of data infrastructure as a service via a network. The customer has control over relevant applications, servers, operating systems and storage options, as well as certain elements of the network in some cases (e.g. on the firewall side).

Platform as a Service (PaaS), are IT components which enable customers to develop their own applications by using programming language and tools supported by the supplier. The customer has control over their own applications, but has no control over networks, servers, operating systems or storage options.

Microsoft Azure comes from hundreds of data centre regions located around the world. Two of these regions are located in Norway. The biggest competitors to Microsoft Azure are Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google Cloud Platform, which have similar offerings.
